Emilia Clarke Speaks About Her Latest ‘Game of Thrones’ Scene

There are spoilers ahead for last Sunday’s episode of Game of Thrones! Read our recap, and then come back when you’re caught up!

It’s long been rumored that Emilia Clarke told the producers of Game of Thrones that she was done doing nude scenes for the series. And that rumor had some credibility considering that Clarke hasn’t gone au naturale since the third season. But that changed on Sunday’s episode as Clarke’s Daenerys burned down the holy temple of the Dothraki and emerged unburned and completely naked. And unlike some other queen on the show, there was no CGI trickery this time!

“This is all me, all proud, all strong. I’m just feeling genuinely happy I said ‘Yes.,'” related Clarke while speaking to Entertainment Weekly. “That ain’t no body double!”

Clarke added that “taking off my clothes is not the easiest thing, but with the magic of the effects, I don’t have to do a season one and go on a cliff and do it. I’m in control of it.” As you may have guessed, Clarke’s part of the scene was shot on a soundstage, while the extras’ reaction to it came from a location shoot.

She later added some clarification on her Instagram account about her previous stance on nude scenes. “In drama, if a nude scene forwards a story or is shot in a way that adds insight into characters, I’m perfectly fine with it. If it’s gratuitous then I will discuss with a director on how to make it more subtle. In either case, like a good Mother of Dragons, I’m always in control.”

The moment itself was a callback to the end of the first season of Game of Thrones, which was the first time that Daenerys’ followers witnessed her apparent immunity to fire. As Clarke alluded to above, it probably wasn’t a very comfortable position for her to do that on location.
