In 2014, HBO’s True Detective was one of the year’s biggest hits and it was a career making moment for writer Nic Pizzolatto and director Cary Joji Fukunaga. While the anthology series had the star power of Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, Pizzolatto and Fukunaga won critical acclaim for their work on the initial eight episodes. At the time, the plan was to keep True Detective going with a new cast and storyline every year. Now it seems as if True Detective may be done at HBO after only two seasons.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the fate of True Detective is up in the air. Instead of bringing the series back for a third season, it seems likely that the network is going to go forward with a brand new series from Pizzolatto.
What happened to the show that was supposed to be HBO’s next big thing? The second season. McConaughey, Harrelson, and Fukunaga all left the show as expected, leaving Pizzolatto to chart the course alone. Season 2 wasn’t lacking for star power, as it had Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, Taylor Kitsch, and Vince Vaughn in the leading roles. But the response from the audience and the critics was less than enthusiastic. Perhaps the synergy of the first season of True Detective just couldn’t be recreated.

Either way, we’re sorry to see True Detective go out with a whimper. That first season was truly something special, and the series deserved another chance to get it right. But if HBO and Pizzolatto are already looking to move on then it’s just not going to happen.
