Dwayne Johnson is The Man of Bronze: Doc Savage!

He’s one of the most popular action heroes in the world, but Dwayne Johnson still hasn’t been a superhero. But it’s not for lack of trying. Dwayne Johnson has been attached to star in the DC fantasy adventure Shazam for a long time, and while we all wait patiently for that particular film to finally get off the ground, he’s gone and attached himself to another superhero. Heck, maybe even the first superhero.

Dwayne Johnson announced on his own Facebook page today that he is now officially attached to star in Doc Savage, an adaptation of the classic pulp hero that will be directed by Shane Black (Iron Man 3) and co-written by Black and Anthony Bagarozzi and Chuck Mondry. In the post, Dwayne Johnson correctly explains the influence Doc Savage has had on the superhero myth, and specifically the many ways in which the pulp character inspired superman.

“But,” according to Dwayne Johnson, “Here’s the #1 reason I’m excited to become Doc Savage.. HE’S A F*CKING HILARIOUS WEIRDO!”

“Confidently, yet innocently he has zero social graces whatsoever due to his upbringing so every interaction he has with someone is direct, odd, often uncomfortable and amazingly hilarious,” Johnson added.

I spoke to Shane Black earlier this month about his plans for Doc Savage, and Black said that the character would remain where he belonged, in the 1930s, in a world where the events of the last Doc Savage movie – Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze (which he described as “a terrible movie”) – never happened.

Shane Black’s slate is a little too full to direct Doc Savage right away, but it is expected to be his next feature film after he finishes the sci-fi sequel The Predator (due out on February 9, 2018).
