For over 40 years, Marvel’s Howard the Duck has been trapped in a world that he never made. And for most of the classic Steve Gerber run, Howard’s constant companion was Beverly Switzler, a woman who dared to love a walking, talking duck!
It’s true, Howard and Bev had a genuine romance, and Lea Thompson even played Beverly in the Howard the Duck movie…which we’re going to stop talking about right now!
The point is that Howard and Beverly were good together for a long time, and now they’re apart. The current Howard the Duck series has sent its title character all over the universe before sending him home to Beverly. The problem is that Beverly and Howard appear to have moved on for good.
In this preview for Howard the Duck # 8, we get a callback to Howard and Beverly’s first adventure together, when they were rockin’ the barbarian fashions of the ’70s and going up against Doctor Bong. But we also see the downside of their time together. And there appears to be some lingering issues about their breakup, which are about to come boiling to the surface.
Marvel’s description of Howard the Duck # 8 is particularly terse this month:
“Howard finally goes home, but is there such a thing for him anymore?”
That really doesn’t tell us much does it? But those pages by artist Joe Quinones are really terrific. Quinones and writer Chip Zdarsky are the regular creative team of the new Howard the Duck series, and for this issue. It will be released on Wednesday, June 8.
