Listen While You Play: Spotify Launches on PS4 and PS3 Today

Spotify is launching on the PS4 and PS3 today, allowing console owners to listen to music via the streaming service whilst they play games.

The platform’s release on the consoles comes after Sony announced it would be laying its Music Unlimited service to rest, with Spotify set to easily fill its shoes. With its full catalog of music available to stream for its subscribers, users can also access any existing playlists they have created. The service will be available to both premium and non-premium members.

The app’s interface has been adapted to blend in with the side-scrolling tiles of the PS4’s UI, while holding the controller’s PS button will bring up a menu that allows you to change tracks and volume without having to exit the game you’re playing.

You can sign into the service by using your Facebook login information, or you can sign up for a premium membership and have it billed directly through your PlayStation Network account. It is also accessible using the Spotify Connect feature, which allows you to browse the service’s library using your smartphone or tablet, if you’d prefer doing so.

Unfortunately, the PS4 cannot distinguish between the audio of the music you’re playing on Spotify and any in-game audio, meaning that some fiddling with settings is required if you want to both listen to music and hear the sound of whatever game you’re playing at the same time. This isn’t too much of an issue, but rooting around in a game’s menus is never fun.

PS4 and PS3 owners can download the app to their console today.
