Nothing is real it seems, after Melbourne’s biggest hipster and the star of The Age‘s street style section last weekend Samuel Davide revealed that he was (shock) trolling us all with his ‘bucolic socialist’ garb. He does not exist and in fact, was just the creation of Sam Hains.
Inspiring adoration and hatred across the country and around the world for his troll-tastic taste in fashion, Hains explained that the decision to out himself came only after the reaction to his little stunt started to get out of control.
“Samuel Davide is a satirical character. But when the media took such interest in my half-assed, satirical “street column,” my interest in how life is marketed and mediatised grew,” he explained in his latest interview.
“I came out because I felt the joke was not well-planned and was self-indulgent and classist to some extent. I performed this for my friends, not the nation, not the world. There were no long-term goals or anything like that. Davide had no media experience.”
All the hatred he was getting online wasn’t exactly helping either, Hains remarking “it’s actually saddening and disturbing that many of the responses to Davide’s outfit and demeanor were vitriolic and aggressive. People projected whatever they wanted onto him.”
It did raise a few existential questions for Hains though. “What if he were a real individual in society? How would he bounce back from this? It would’ve been hilarious to explore Davide and perform his decline into madness, but this is taking up too much of my energy.”
Oh well, that’s what you get when you engage in this type of high conceptual tomfoolery with people who still buy physical copies of newspapers. Lucky he didn’t make a dig at super benefits or negative gearing, though…
