Well, gentlemen, your time has come. We’re talking about the arrival of male birth control.
Scientists recently announced that a new form of contraceptives developed for men has proven to be 99 percent effective. Granted, it’s only been tested on mice so far, but humans trials should be underway by the end of the year.
Dubbed YCT529, the contraceptive, when taken orally, drastically reduced sperm counts and prevented almost all pregnancies in mating trials among mice.
Even better news? No glaring side effects. Researchers tracked weight, appetite, and activity of the rodents and found nothing concerning. (Although mice can’t complain, so other adverse effects could arise in human trials.)
“Multiple studies showed that men are interested in sharing the responsibility of birth control with their partners,” Md Abdullah Al Noman, a graduate student at the University of Minnesota who will present the work, told AFP.
