Shawn Levy’s a highly coveted director these days, thanks largely to impressive advance buzz on Real Steel, his upcoming Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots boxing movie starring Hugh Jackman. Of course, this is also the man who gave us such box office bonanzas as Night at the Museum and Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian, but whereas those were light family entertainments he appears to be seguing into more interesting territory now. With the fate of his Fantastic Voyage remake uncertain, he is apparently considering an adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein instead.
This would, of course, mark not only the umpteen-billionth Frankenstein movie ever produced – we’re fond of the weird 1980s Sting/Jennfier Beals version, The Bride (below) – but also the umpteen billionth Frankenstein movie currently in various stages of production, including but not limited to Guillermo del Toro’s version (which would star Doug Jones as the monster), Neil Burger’s Bride of Frankenstein remake for Universal, and Tim Burton’s remake of his own early, loose-loose-loose Frankenstein adaptation, Frankenweenie.
Fox’s Frankenstein remake was written by Max Landis, son of legendary horror and comedy director John Landis, who made his screenwriting debut on the Masters of Horror episode Deer Woman, a hilarious and inventive story which may arguably be the highlight of that entire series. So this might actually be boss.
