FUN FACT: If you ever find yourself in a job that requires you to post movie news, never get comfortable on Friday nights. You aren’t allowed to go outside, and sitting down with a box of Oreos to finallly watch Attack the Block is a pretty bad idea too. Hollywood likes to squeak one big news story in before the weekend, just to keep you on your toes, and to maximize the amount of time the story gets on the front page. Case in point: the announcement that Avengers star Scarlett Johansson is directing Summer Crossing, based on the lost novel by Truman Capote.

Summer Crossing will mark The Black Widow’s first outing as a feature film director (she previously directed the short film These Vagabond Shoes in 2009). She has no plans to appear in front of the camera. Capote’s book, about a New York debutante who stays home while her family vacations in Europe, marries a Jewish parking attendant in a whirlwind romance, and boasts a real downer of an ending, was only released in 2005, 21 years after the acclaimed author’s death. Tristine Skyler, herself an acclaimed playwright (and co-star of Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2… yes, really) will adapt the novel into a screenplay, having ventured into similar territory with her adaptation of Sylvia Plath’s The Bell Jar for Julia Stiles… a film which has yet to be made.
