On the surface, Starship Troopers seems like an obvious choice for a remake. The original 1997 film, directed by Paul Verhoeven, has a strong cult following but failed at the box office. The film, though now critically acclaimed, is considered an inaccurate adaptation of the source material, since it darkly satirized the books’ promotion of militarism. (The book, which takes the opposite approach, is on the recommended reading list for the U.S. Marines and Navy.) It’s a big sci-fi movie about heroic soldiers fighting monsters. Yeah, that would be a great idea for a remake… if the first movie didn’t rock so hard.
But a remake we’re getting anyway, Vulture has announced, from producer Neal Moritz over at Sony. Moritz is responsible for a handful of blockbusters, including the Fast and the Furious series and I Am Legend (itself another inaccurate adaptation of a sci-fi classic), and quite a few stinkers, including Evan Almighty and Stealth, so this could go in either direction. If it helps, he’s tapped Ashley Edward Miller and Zack Stentz to write the screenplay. You may remember them from X-Men: First Class and Thor, which were good, and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicle as well as Agent Cody Banks, which were not so good.
We just don’t know what to think. We guess as long as they finally incorporate the Sarah Brightman song we’ll be happy.
