After nearly twenty years of rumors, development hell and fan speculation, Dumber and Dumber 2 (aka Dumb and Dumber To, tee-hee) finally got the green light earlier this year. The Farrelly Brothers were back. Jeff Daniels was back. Even Jim Carrey was back… until today. The comedy superstar has reportedly dropped out of the long-awaited project because New Line and Warner Bros., in the words of ETOnline, “showed a lack of enthusiasm regarding the project.”
This development, of course, raises many questions. First, is this really happening? Is Jim Carrey really exiting his most anticipated movie in well over a decade, and only giving the story to Entertainment Tonight Online? Could this be a ploy of some kind, to spur the studios into giving more support to the project? And what if it is true? Would it make any sense whatsoever to continue with Dumb and Dumber To? Could you just take Carrey’s character out of the script and continue the franchise with just Jeff Daniels? You could call it Dumb. Because it’s totally dumb.
The big question, however, is whether cancelling Dumb and Dumber To would really be such a great loss. The odds of capturing the exact same magic decades later is pretty minimal, and even if they pulled it off, what would we get? Dumb and Dumber To. It’s not like the world was suddenly going to be a better place. It’s a comedy sequel. How rarely do those work anyway?
CraveOnline will be back with more Dumb and Dumber To news after we get back from a little place called Aspen.
