The Cable Guy

Jim Carrey Returns as ‘The Cable Guy’ in Best ’90s Resurrection We Weren’t Expecting (Watch Here)

When one thinks back on Jim Carrey’s legendary run of comedy movies in the 90s, 1996’s The Cable Guy doesn’t immediately come to mind. The film, which was directed by Ben Stiller, was a box office success but received a mixed critical response. Although The Cable Guy has gained a modest cult following in the time since the quirky dark comedy has largely been lost to time. So, if you happened to have Jim Carrey reprising his role as Chip Douglas on your 2022 bingo card, you’re in luck!

However, Carrey’s return to the role is not for a sequel, but rather a Super Bowl commercial. While the big game is in the books, the commercials this year were filled with celebrity cameos, returning characters, and shameless product promotion. All three were on full display for Verizon’s commercial featuring Carrey returning as Chip, something that makes us question whether the 26-year wait was worth it after all.

As you can see, the whole joke here is that the idea of a Cable Guy has now become the wifi guy. It’s actually an interesting premise that speaks to how outdated the idea of a cable guy actually is. It’s just too bad that it has to be a borderline cringe commercial rather than a proper sequel. Either way, the presence of Geraldine Viswanathan is a wonderful surprise and quite honestly, would make the perfect millennial foil to Carrey’s antiquated Chip.

Wait, is this secretly a petition to get a sequel made? We’d be open to the idea, just as long as no NFT’s are involved.
