Jose Padilha’s remake of Robocop appears to have hit a snag. Whether it’s a little snag, the kind that happens to every production now and again, or a big and troubling one remains to be seen, but either way it’s moving back its release date six whole months, from August 9, 2013 to February 7, 2014. In its place, Sony is moving Neill Blomkamp’s follow-up to District 9, the new sci-fi thriller Elysium, from its original March 1, 2013 release date to Robocop‘s old spot in August. It’s tempting to draw negative conclusions from Robocop‘s schedule change, and we might just find out somewhere down the road that something unfortunate has befallen the heavily-scrutinized remake, but until then try to remain calm. There’s no reason to suspect any foul play. Movies get pushed back and forth all the time. Everyone freaked out when Titanic moved from July 2, 1997 to December 19, 1997, and that worked out more or less okay, didn’t it?
As it stands there’s an odd bit of coincidental synergy, since Robocop will now go head to head on its opening weekend with Need for Speed, a film which just yesterday announced that “Breaking Bad’s” Aaron Paul would be headlining the production.
