AMC Officially Orders ‘The Killing’ Season 3

Back in August, rumors began swirling that AMC and Fox Television Studios were in talks to revive “The Killing” in conjunction with Netflix. And after months of silence, the deal has finally been made… without Netflix.

AMC has officially given the greenlight for a third season of “The Killing,” with Mireille Enos and Joel Kinnaman both set to reprise their roles as Sarah Linden and Stephen Holder. According to Deadline, negotiations with Netflix are still in progress, but “The Killing” is definitely set for 12 new episodes on AMC. This reverses AMC’s earlier decision to cancel the series following a steady viewership decline.

“The Killing” Season 3 will take place one year after the Rosie Larsen case was closed, with Linden having put the life of a homicide detective behind her. However, Holder reaches out to his ex-partner when he uncovers a grisly series of murders connected to one of Linden’s previous cases.

Deadline also notes that the creative team behind “The Killing” have apparently learned their lesson from the backlash over not revealing Rosie’s killer by the end of the first season. The new case will reportedly be solved this season.

“The Killing” showrunner, Veena Sud will also remain with the series as it goes into the third season. In a statement, Sud said “I couldn’t be happier to know that I will be returning to work with AMC, FTVS and Mireille and Joel on what is and has always been a passion project for me,” said Sud. “To the fans that have supported the series, thank you for doing so. My team and I will work hard to deliver the best story that we can for Season 3.”

The resurrection of “The Killing” is due in large part to the rising prominence of Enos and Kinnaman, both of whom landed major roles in upcoming movies including World War Z and the Robocop remake, respectively.

A premiere date for the third season of “The Killing” wasn’t given, but production will begin again near the end of February.
