It looks as though Bethesda is throwing in the towel on The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim as they begin to transition to their next project. The company issued a statement on their official blog, thanking all the fans that have made Skyrim the success it is. The team at Bethesda began work on Skyrim back in 2006 and outside some planned minor updates, Bethesda is hanging up work on it so they can give their full attention to their next game, whatever that may be.
“For the last year and a half we’ve been working on new content for Skyrim; from the game updates, Creation Kit, Steam Workshop, Kinect support, to DLCs,” writes the blog post. “Parts of our team have also been in pre-production on our next major project, and that game is at the point where it requires the studio’s full attention to make it our biggest and best work yet.”
To date there have been three expansions released for Skyrim – “Dawnguard,” “Hearthfire,” and “Dragonborn.” The expansions all released on Xbox 360 first, with PC and PS3 releases following some time thereafter. It’s been well documented that Bethesda has had a rough time bringing the expansion content to the PlayStation 3 platform due to coding issues, but thankfully all three expansions released on Sony’s platform this past February.
While it’s a bummer we won’t see anymore expansion content for Skyrim, we can’t hold it against Bethesda for moving on to their next big game. In fact, it’s exciting to hear they have something new in the works. And let’s be serious for a hot second – the lack of new content for Skyrim will not stop people from continuing to play it and forging their own unique stories in the land of Tamriel.
