Shelf Space News: Iron Man 3 Blu-ray Scheduled

The first summer movie of the year has been announced for home video, although not to be topped, VUDU did ask me to preorder Man of Steel already. I mean, come on! But Iron Man 3, currently the biggest movie of the year, is coming to Blu-ray 3D, HD, combo pack and DVD on September 24. You can get it in Digital HD and Digital HD 3D early on Sept 3.

That’s a whole lotta formats right there. Since I saw the movie in 3D at the press screenings, I’m actually looking forward to the 2D Blu-ray. The film is a visual extravaganza and I’d love to see those colors without the dimming 3D glasses. The new Iron Patriot design, all the new Iron Man drones and the Extremis gang will pop on Blu-ray. And because it was shot in 3D, that usually makes for a better 2D transfer. They’ve got two lenses to choose the best picture from.

Bonus features are still being revealed. The list included on this first press release ends with an ominous “And more…” So far what they’re saying sounds pretty awesome.

Right now, an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at Thor: The Dark World seems the most enticing. By September, we may have already seen a lot on Thor 2 at Comic-Con.

“Deconstructing the Scene: Attack on Air Force One” promises to introduce us to the skydivers who did the mid-air rescue scene from the movie. I wonder if they’re any of the same guys from Point Break or Drop Zone. I mean, there can’t be a lot of work for skydiving stunt men. I hope they spread the wealth around.

WATCH: CraveOnline interviews Iron Man 3 director Shane Black about the film’s action sequences and his upcoming adaptation of Doc Savage.

“Marvel’s Iron Man 3 Unmasked” includes the cast and crew so should be the standard “making of” segment. Gag reel should have plenty of Robert Downey, Jr. improv fun and let’s hope deleted and extended scenes include the scenes set in China. There’s no mention of the Chinese version of the film as yet. Drew Pearce and Shane Black have an audio commentary too, so it’ll be fun to listen to Black speak for two straight hours.

Iron Man 3 finds Tony Stark (Downey) recovering from the battle in New York at the end of The Avengers when someone from his past returns as a new enemy. It ends with the promise that Tony Stark will return, and now we know Downey has signed on for Avengers 2 and 3. By the time we get back from Comic-Con and see some of the Thor 2 footage, maybe we’ll have a better idea where Iron Man 3 fits in Stark’s story.
