The Director’s Guild of Canada awards were given out at a gala event in Toronto this past weekend, and the film “Midnight’s Children” as well as the TV movie “Jack” were the big winners of the evening.
More than 500 film and television industry professionals attend the event, which honours craftspeople working in the screen-based industry. Nineteen awards in total were handed out on Saturday, and the event was hosted by comedian Seán Cullen.
“Midnight’s Children” is based on the novel by acclaimed author Salman Rushdie, was directed by Deepha Mehta and won for best feature film. It follows two children in India who experience the country’s new independence from Britain. “Jack” was announced as the Best TV Movie, a flick that profiled the life of Jack Layton, the charismatic NDP leader.
“The Borgias,” starring Jeremy Irons and Francois Arnaud, won for best dramatic television series (as well as best sound editing), while “Stories We Tell” by Sarah Polley was recognized for excellence in documentary.
