Last summer, John Oliver stepped in as interim host of “The Daily Show” for several weeks while Jon Stewart took time off to direct his first feature film. Oliver’s run was widely acclaimed and it had even been speculated that he would eventually succeed Stewart on “The Daily Show.”
However, HBO has announced that a deal has been struck that will bring Oliver to HBO for his own weekly talk show that will be broadcast on Sundays. Like “The Daily Show,” Oliver’s new program will also satirize news, politics and current events.
“I’m incredibly excited to be joining HBO,” said Oliver in a brief statement. “Especially as I presume this means I get free HBO now. I want to thank Comedy Central, and everyone at The Daily Show for the best seven and a half years of my life. But most of all, I’d like to thank Jon Stewart. He taught me everything I know. In fact, if I fail in the future, it’s entirely his fault.”
Oliver spent seven years as a frequently used correspondent on “The Daily Show” before eventually hosting “John Oliver’s New York Stand-Up Show” on Comedy Central.
Back in September, Oliver also signed on to appear in several episodes of “Community” Season 5. Oliver’s new HBO talk show will premiere in 2014.
