CES 2014 VIDEO: First Look Event Update
As the largest electronics trade show in the world, CES hosts plenty of industry award ceremonies, including the CEA MoDev Hackathon, Mobile Apps Showdown and Last Gadget Standing.
But, if I'm honest, most of the Consumer Electronics Show awards shows mean a lot of nerds in ties or uptight venture capitalists in expensive suits participating in celebrations that can make Gregorian chant sessions seem exciting.
But, 2014 CES will host Variety’s 2014 Breakthrough of the Year Awards – a red carpet event held Thursday, January 9 to celebrate the fields of film, televisions, sports, music, comedy, technology, philanthropy and social media. That's a lot of ground to cover, but it promises to come off a hell of a lot more exciting than the traditional Java Applet of the Year festivities. The Breakthrough Awards go down live on stage in the Las Vegas Hotel (LVH) Theatre.
The introduction of such a cross cultural awards show highlights how far CES has come in the national pop culture consciousness. Once a massive gathering of gadgets, it's now an international happening that other fields of endeavor want on the bandwagon to draw off a little of the massive publicity stream headed to Vegas in early January.
