It’s been a few years since Ronald D. Moore had a show on TV. “Caprica” was Moore’s first series after “Battlestar Galactica” finished its run on Syfy, but “Caprica” came to an abrupt end after only a single season. Now “Moore” has “Outlander” coming to STARZ and “Helix” premiering on Syfy later this week.
“Helix” was created by Cameron Porsandeh and executive produced by Moore. This series is a stark departure from the “Blue Skies Sci-fi” of “Eureka” and “Warehouse 13.” Former co-star of “The Killing,” Billy Campbell leads the cast of “Helix” as Dr. Alan Farragut, a high ranking CDC official who is specifically asked to lead a team to an Arctic facility where an incredibly virulent disease may be on the verge of becoming a pandemic.
Syfy has released the first 15 minutes of “Helix” ahead of the premiere to give fans a taste of what to expect. In the extended clip below, we’re introduced to Alan and his potential love interest, Dr. Sarah Jordan (Jordan Hayes) and treated to some painfully awkward exposition about Alan’s messy relationship with his brother, Dr. Peter Farragut (Neil Napier) and Dr. Julia Walker (Kyra Zagorsky).
It’s a little bit of a bumpy start for the series, but “Helix” does have some impressive sequences near the end of the clip as Alan and his team begin to realize the severity of the threat.
“Helix” will debut this Friday, January 10 on Syfy with two back-to-back episodes.
