Back in 2011, Denis Leary ended his run on FX’s “Rescue Me” after seven seasons. But after three years away from the network, Leary’s next TV project is coming to FX.
FX Networks has ordered a pilot for “Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll,” a new comedy project written by Leary in which he will play Johnny Rock, a 50 year old rock musician whose short lived glory days came in the early ‘90s as the lead singer of a NYC band called The Heathens. Twenty years after the band broke up, Johnny tries to reunite with his former partners despite the fact that Johnny slept with the wife of his lead guitar player and the fiancee of his base player before they fell out.
In a brief statement, FX President of Original Programming, Eric Schrier said “Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll is a terrific script and concept with Denis Leary’s signature brand of comedy. Denis is a tremendous talent who played a major role in the growth of our network with Rescue Me, which was one of the most groundbreaking series of the last decade.”
Because FX releases original programming on two cable networks, it’s not clear if
“Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll” is being geared towards FX or FXX. Both FX Networks have several comedy pilots in the works.
“Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll” is expected to begin production in New York this spring.
