In the past few years, HBO has held back on officially renewing “Game of Thrones” until it could be timed with a specific boost in the press or a new ratings record.
This year, HBO is done playing games with the future of the show.
After only a single episode of the fourth season, HBO has confirmed a “Game of Thrones’ renewal for two additional seasons of ten episodes each. As it stands, this means that “Game of Thrones” will run through at least its sixth season in 2016.
This announcement had been expected ever since HBO locked up “Game of Thrones” showrunners/executive producers D.B. Weiss and David Benioff for the fifth and sixth seasons.
In a brief statement, HBO Programming President, Michael Lombardo said “‘Game of Thrones’ is a phenomenon like no other. David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, along with their talented collaborators, continue to surpass themselves, and we look forward to more of their dazzling storytelling.”
The fourth season premiere not only drew in 6.6 million viewers on its initial broadcast, it also crashed HBO Go. It was also another record high rating for the show itself. With its continuous rise in popularity, “Game of Thrones” seems poised to pass “The Sopranos” as HBO’s most popular series of all time.
“Game of Thrones” Season 4 will continue this Sunday on HBO.
