Roberto Orci to Direct Star Trek 3?

The names Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci have been synonymous forever.  So now that there’s word (via Crave film site Cinema Blend) that the longtime screenwriting partners are splitting to pursue solo endeavors, it makes sense that at least one of the pair would be interested in wearing J.J. Abrams’ old hat and sliding into the captain’s chair aboard the starship Enterprise.

Variety reports Kurtzman and Orci, who have script credits on tentpole franchises from Amazing Spider-Man to Mission: Impossible to Transformers, were ending their feature screenwriting partnership so each could chase their directorial aspirations.

While Kurtzman already has 2012’s People Like Us under his belt (not to mention being THIS close to nabbing directing duties on the Spider-Man spinoff flick Venom), Orci is still working to line up his own directorial debut. That pursuit is reportedly targeted at landing Orci a directing assignment on Star Trek 3, taking over for now Star Wars-focused collaborator Abrams.

Orci is already intimately familiar with the series, penning the first two rebooted Enterprise installments along with Kurtzman and could lend some stability for the in-question franchise in Abrams’ absence.

Maybe a big showing for the latest (and apparently, last) Kurtzman/Orci script for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 could help get Orci the gig when ASM 2 debuts in the U.S. May 2.
