Floyd Mayweather Wants to Buy the Clippers?

With NBA Commissioner Adam Silver dropping the hammer on L.A. Clippers owner and raging racist Donald Sterling Tuesday, the line of potential buyers ready to buy Sterling out of the league is already getting crazy long.

But in addition to rampant rumors that the investment group led by Magic Johnson was among the prime contenders to end Sterling’s tenure, how about letting Floyd “Money” Mayweather get his hands on the controls of the Clip Ship instead?

Mayweather not so subtly threw his name into consideration Tuesday during an interview with Yahoo! Sports, according to Crave sports site NESN.

Ahead of his title unification fight Saturday with welterweight titleholder Marcos Maidana at the MGM Grand Garden, Mayweather said he was part of a group that was chopping at the bit to buy the franchise.

“I can’t come in here talking about Mayweather only going to get three percent or four percent,” Mayweather said. “I got to get a solid percentage. But do we want to buy the Clippers? Yes we do. We’re very, very interested in buying the Clippers.”

Mayweather is the top-earning athlete in the world, so he’d definitely have the kind of cash it takes to get in on a deal like that, although probably as a minority stakeholder.

But would the NBA really think the appropriate replacement for Donald Sterling would be Floyd Mayweather?  Seems like going from one incredibly controversial loudmouth to another…but if the league can force Sterling to sell his beloved team, and Mayweather’s group put up the biggest offer, it’s a good guess that Silver and Co. could find a way to make it work.
