It’s official: the director’s chair of Star Trek 3 has been handed over to someone who has never directed a movie before. As rumored, the reins have been given to none other than Roberto Orci, the screenwriter who co-wrote Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness along with his former writing partner Alex Kurtzman. Together, they’ve written and/or produced two Star Trek movies, three Transformers movies, one Zorro (not the good one) and one Spider-Man (not one of the good ones).
To their credit, they also brought us to the TV series “Fringe,” “Sleepy Hollow” and “Jack of All Trades.”
Variety confirmed the news that Orci’s first solo project after his split with Alex Kurtzman will be the directing duties on Star Trek 3, bout which we know absolutely nothing and – since J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot is still involved – about which we will probably know nothing until the film’s release in the near-ish future. No release date has been set, but the Star Trek franchise turns 50 in 2016, so we imagine they producers will want to capitalize on the novelty factor.
