History of NXNE

North By Northeast is turning 20 this year! The iconic NXNE event, which celebrates film, music, art, comedy, and interactive mediums, is marking the milestone with a stellar line-up this year.

Modelled after the South By Southwest event in Austin, Texas, North By Northeast began in 1995 and continues to be one of the biggest most sought-after festivals in the entire country. It’s become the go-to destination for emerging artists and major-label headliners, filmmakers, hilarious comedians, visual, sound, and other artists, as well as innovators bridging the gap between technology and the arts. Seen as the most anticipated summer music event in Canada, NXNE Music, NXNE Film, NXNE Interactive, NXNE Art, and NXNE Comedy are an essential gathering for artists, industry, and fans.

“We’re really looking at it like North By 2.0 this year,” said Christopher Roberts, NXNE Festival Director. “The curation of years past has been great but there was a lack of cohesion in who we were bringing up and why. We are striving to create a distinct brand and voice for the festival, and within that our curation speaks to where we’re going.”

Here are a few important dates to remember for this year’s North By Northeast:

NXNE Film: June 13-15, & 22

NXNE Interactive: June 17-21

NXNE Music: June 18-22

NXNE Art: June 16-22

NXNE Comedy: June 17-22

In all, NXNE runs 10 days and nights, draws over 350,000 attendees, and generates an annual economic impact of approximately $50 million on the city of Toronto.

NXNE runs from June 13-22. For more info visit their official website.
