Exclusive Interview: Graeme Mason on ‘Orphan Black’ Season 2

When “Orphan Black” gave a season two panel to the Television Critics Association, I couldn’t help myself. I asked about the name of Donnie’s porno tape that Alison finds in his stash. “Big Boob Blowies” sounds like the most innocent porno ever. What does that even mean and is it based on anything?

“Actually, I must give credit where it’s due,” “Orphan Black” creator Graeme Mason said. “I believe that was Alex Levine’s episode, and he came up with the porno video title ‘Big Boob Blowies,; and it really works with three slaps: Big! Boob! Blowies!”

When Alison confronts Donnie, she slaps it once to enunciate each word. Tatiana Maslany liked the question too. “And it’s like perfect,” she said. “Totally Donnie would watch that. That’s what he would watch.”

BBC America held a tea reception with the cast of “Orphan Black” following the panel, and I had a quick chance to talk to Mason one on one. I had a few more season one questions before I inquired about the new season.

CraveOnline: I never expected such a substantial answer about Big Boob Blowies. It’s great more thought went into that than just the title.

Graeme Mason: Yeah, Alison’s three slaps on “Big Boob Blowies” was definitely [important.]

Did Tatiana improvise the slaps?

I don’t think it was improvised, but I don’t think it was scripted. I think [director] John [Fawcett] and Tatiana worked it out.

The most number of clones you had in a scene was three the first season. Is part of being bolder getting more clones together?

We’d love to try it. It’s just so time consuming I don’t know if we’re going to be able to.

Even the “Da Vinci’s Demons” gang talks about how time consuming their Da Vinci Vision CGI shots are.

Yeah, the Technodolly which is the crane that allows us to do the camera moves with the clones and do the clones crossing and the contact, we call that the Time Vampire. That thing will kill your day.

When she poured wine and the other clone took a sip, that blew my mind.

John’s always one upping himself with what can I do? What can I get away with? What can we do that hasn’t been seen.

So the wine wasn’t in the script either?

It was. Very, very scripted. A lot of thought went into that wine pouring.

If we wanted to mount a “Save Cosima” campaign, would that have any influence on where you’re going with the story?

It might. It might. You should mount a “Save Cosima” campaign.

I honestly thought Donnie was clear after the interrogation scene, so that was a great misdirect. Are there other characters who maybe we shouldn’t trust as much as we do?

Definitely. I think by the end of the season you can certainly how much we trust Mrs. S is up for debate. There’s a lot of issues of trust in the second season. Who do you trust? How do you trust? How much do you trust? Do you use them when you don’t trust them? Those kinds of things.

Is the investigation of Beth and Sarah still ongoing?

Those characters continue, yes. Art and DeAngelis, the cops, are all of course still sniffing around the edges, absolutely.
