Earlier this year, “Sherlock” returned for its third season on BBC One before once again going on an extended hiatus. However, “Sherlock” may not be gone too long this time around.
While speaking with The Telegraph, “Sherlock” star Martin Freeman said “If that’s going to be a [‘Sherlock’] special – I’m speaking off-message here; if this was New Labour I’d get fired – I think that might be for next Christmas. A Christmas special. That’s what I understand.”
Freeman had previously hinted at a standalone “Sherlock” special and the third season finale took place during the Christmas holiday season, which may indicate that the “Sherlock” special will follow up on that. Freeman also indicated that filming of the special “looks pretty likely” to take place in early 2015.

Freeman also indicated that his longtime partner, Amanda Abbington will reprise her role as John Watson’s wife, Mary. However, he also added that “While we play fast and loose with the original stories, we generally follow the trajectory of what Conan Doyle did. So he [Watson] gets married, and then Mary dies – so at some point presumably she’ll die.”
That may be the case, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that Mary will die anytime soon. With the glacial pace of “Sherlock’s” production, it could be a very long time before series co-creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss get to that story.
