Australia Not Included In Mazda MX-5 International Release

The new fourth-generation Mazda MX-5 is set for a simultaneous international release around the globe later this year, but the popular Australian roadster option won’t be included in the special rollout event.

Celebrating 25 years of the model’s success, Mazda will unveil the latest version of its convertible sports car in three different spots around the globe on September 4, but unlike June’s Melbourne unveiling of the Mazda3, the manufacturer has opted to leave Australia and its 10 per cent share of global MX-5 sales out of the release day celebrations.

Japan, the US and Europe will each get a taste of the 100 kilogram lighter fourth-gen model, now offered with the 1.5-litre Skyactiv four-cylinder engine and the meatier 2.0-litre Skyactiv, capable of 0-100km/h acceleration in 6.5 seconds.

“We’re excited to make this official, to announce that the newest member of the MX-5 Miata family will be arriving soon,” Mazda North American president and CEO Jim O’Sullivan said.

“We’re excited to make this official, to announce that the newest member of the MX-5 Miata family will be arriving soon. Along with our colleagues around the world, we continue to celebrate the MX-5′s 25th anniversary and look forward to sharing even more news in the near future,”

Originally launched as the ‘NA’ model in 1989, a formal release is expected at November’s Paris Auto Show with vehicles expected to go on sale in the US in the first half of 2015.
