It’s no secret that Super Smash Bros. for Wii U has been stealing the show as of late. We even put it on our top games of E3 list, and personally it was my all-out game of show. Still, Nintendo has promised all along that the 3DS version plays just as superbly as its older brother, and the company is about to show Smash’s handheld iteration some serious love.

Nintendo of America revealed that a 3DS-centric Smash competition will take place during this year’s San Diego Comic-Con on July 25th, and much like Nintendo’s E3 festivities this year, the entire event will be streamed live via the company’s official Twitch channel.
Fans are invited to come to the Nintendo Gaming Lounge at the Marriott Marquis & Marina located at 333 W. Harbor Drive (adjacent to the San Diego Convention Center) for a chance to participate.
Starting at noon, there will be a preliminary round in which groups of four competitors battle it out, with the winner advancing. During the finals, players will duke it out one-on-one to determine the top smasher. Tournament slots are limited, and fans will be able to sign up the day of the event on a first-come, first-served basis.
For fans not able to attend San Diego Comic-Con, tournament action will be streamed live on Nintendo’s Twitch channel at http://www.twitch.tv/Nintendo. Additional Nintendo Gaming Lounge activities will be announced in the future.
I’m skeptical as to whether Nintendo can realistically top the ridiculous excitement of the Super Smash Bros. Invitational from E3 earlier this year, but I suppose it’s the thought that counts. Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS is releasing in North America on October 3rd, so the tourney should offer fans a prime opportunity to study-up.
