First Look: Uncanny X-Men # 25

There are some spoilers ahead for The Last Will & Testament of Charles Xavier storyline currently running in Uncanny X-Men! You’ve been warned…

Brian Michael Bendis may have finally found the plot twist that he can’t deliver on. In Uncanny X-Men # 24, Bendis revealed that the late Charles Xavier had been married to Mystique, the former leader of the Brotherhood and one of the X-Men’s longtime adversaries.

Reason why this is bullshit # 1: Mystique murdered Xavier’s former lover, Moira MacTaggert. Even someone as forgiving as Charles Xavier would have a hard time getting over. Reason # 2: Mystique had a serious grudge against Xavier for bringing Rogue into the X-Men. Reason # 3: Mystique betrayed Xavier during the brief period in which he used her as a secret operative. Reason # 4: Mystique betrayed the X-Men again after they voted her on to the team over Rogue’s objections.

Clearly Xavier and Mystique had a solid foundation for a relationship… right?

The solicitation copy for this issue says that Xavier has also been hiding “a mutant so powerful their very existence was a threat to mutant’s way of life. A destructive force so powerful they would’ve wiped out any chance of a peaceful coexistence between humans and mutants. An unstoppable power now unleashed in the wake of Xavier’s death!”

So, an all powerful mutant child who was hidden away from the world… like Moira’s son, Proteus or Xavier’s son, Legion? Somehow, I think we’ve been down this road before.

Uncanny X-Men # 25 by Bendis and artist Chris Bachalo  will be released on Wednesday, September 3.
