Three Australians Win Creative Arts Emmys

The 2014 Creative Arts Emmy Awards were held in Los Angeles this weekend and three talented Australians have taken away awards for their work on hit TV shows, “Game Of Thrones and “True Detective“.

Deborah Riley was awarded with a statue for Outstanding Art Direction for her work as production designer on HBO’s “Game Of Thrones“. Riley, 40, took over as lead production designer on the cult series ahead of season 4, which aired this year.

Graphic designer Patrick Clair and animator Raoul Marks also picked up an award for outstanding main title design on the opening credits of another HBO favourite, “True Detective“. The duo created the opening sequence for the hit TV series that stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, from a Sydney studio.

“I’m a huge fan of so many shows that HBO has done over the years and they let titles come to the fore and have room to breathe,” Patrick Clair told the ABC. “We got those scripts and to be so excited when flicking through them and when we got the job, we were over the moon.”

“The internet has made the world a small place. To get work from France and so often, different places in Los Angeles and New York to access the global entertainment brands. It is really exciting,” he added. “Hopefully this award will give us the momentum to be recognised.”

The Creative Arts Emmys are held a week prior to the main Emmy Awards and focus on the creative disciplines of television production that occur behind-the-scenes. Almost 80 awards were announced at this year’s ceremony.

“True Detective” also took home awards for outstanding make-up and outstanding casting in a drama, a win that may foreshadow the events of next weekend’s 66th annual prime-time Emmy Awards. Netflix’s “Orange Is the New Black” won the Emmy for casting for a comedy series and FX drama “Fargo“, which stars Billy Bob Thornton and Martin Freeman, won the Emmy for casting for a miniseries.

This year the first ever Emmy for outstanding character voice-over was awarded and went to Harry Shearer for his work on “The Simpsons“. His characters include Mr Burns, Waylon Smithers, Ned Flanders, Reverend Lovejoy, Kent Brockman, Dr. Hibbert and Rainier Wolfcastle.

The Primetime Emmy Awards will be held in the US on August 25th.
