Last month at San Diego Comic Con International, sharp eyed fans may have noticed that NBC had a few ads promoting “Emerald City” despite the show’s complete absence from the convention. But it seems unlikely that “Emerald City” will get off the ground.
According to Deadline, NBC has pulled the plug on “Emerald City,” Matthew Arnold’s “Game of Thrones” inspired take on the Oz novels by L. Frank Baum. The report cites creative differences between NBC and “Emerald City” showrunner Josh Friedman about the direction of the show for NBC’s abrupt decision to pull out. Last spring, NBC had given “Emerald City” a ten episode straight-to-series order.
As envisioned by Arnold and Friedman, “Emerald City” followed “a head-strong 20-year-old Dorothy Gale is unwittingly sent on an eye-opening journey that thrusts her into the center of an epic and bloody battle for the control of Oz.” Universal Television is reportedly still actively supporting “Emerald City” and attempting to find a new home for the show.

That may be harder than it sounds. During the most recent TV development season, there were Wizard of Oz inspired shows at several networks including an Oz themed medical drama on CBS and “Dorothy Must Die” on The CW; which cast Dorothy and her friends as the new tyrants of Oz eight decades after Dorothy’s first adventure into Oz. Of the major broadcast networks, only Fox and ABC were without Oz inspired shows of their own.
