Michael Pachter Says Nintendo “Will Have to Abandon Hardware”

Oh, my.

We all know the infamous Michael Pachter and his lovely industry predictions (he does this sort of thing for a living, you know), but sometimes he really decides to put the hammer down.

He predicts that Nintendo will have to abandon its hardware. His claim is based on his observation that Nintendo is about a decade behind in terms of console technology, and that they are so self-absorbed that they can’t be bothered to look outside themselves to see what’s going on and sorta “keep up”, shall we say.

In some ways, he’s right. In others, he’s wrong. Nintendo has a very, very strong handheld presence throughout the video game industry, and that’s not going anywhere anytime soon. Publishers are dropping content from their main home console (Wii U) left and right, but their mobile gaming identity is rock solid, because of the sheer level of market saturation since the days of the original GameBoy. Nearly everyone has a Nintendo handheld gaming device, from young to old.

Do you think Nintendo should continue making consoles and handhelds with their current approach to the business? Or do they need to change?
