The PSP had its very own Final Fantasy game in Final Fantasy Type-0 (in Japan, anyway), but what about Sony’s current handheld console? According to recent remarks from Final Fantasy XV director Hajime Tabata, the fate of the series on Vita will depend on fan demand and “if Square Enix is willing to stand by that demand and follow through.”
If things were to fall into place, it sounds as though Tabata has considered the details of a Vita Final Fantasy game more so than you might expect.
The potential is always there, but I’ve been making games recently on console. Hypothetically, personally speaking, if I were to work on a Final Fantasy game for, say, the Vita platform, I would love to implement elements of co-op play and versus play, and have a Final Fantasy that has roots in allowing for people to play together.
[My goal is] to make the most use of the best specs on the current hardware. Of course, I’ve worked on titles on handheld, and I’d aim for the best quality on a limited screen size and try to bring out the best in the device.

Though currently too consumed by Final Fantasy XV to delve much deeper into Vita prospects, it’s clear that Tabata wouldn’t mind doing for Vita what he did for PSP back in 2011. Luckily, those who missed out on Final Fantasy Type-0 will have a chance to try it out on PS4 and Xbox One, in all of its remastered glory, on March 17th.
