George Lucas is finding himself involved in litigation over his desire to put a narrative art museum on the shores of Lake Michigan.
My hometown happens to be Chicago, and while I would love to see Lucas be able to open a museum on our beautiful lakefront, it’s already quite occupied. There’s McCormick place, Grant Park, Millennium Park, various beaches, Adler Planetarium, Field Museum, Museum of Science and Industry, Shedd Aquarium, Navy Pier, Soldier Field (and the spaceship that landed on it), the Art Institute, and more.
Needless to say, there’s a lot going on near the lakefront in Chicago. A massive museum founded by George Lucas himself would require a lot of prime real estate that is likely highly valued, or already occupied by an already-popular venue that probably has significant local and regional historical impact.
Chicago conservation group Friends of the Parks is behind the lawsuit filed against George Lucas. Aside from all of the popular landmarks on the lakefront, the land that is open is public trust property. The government is obligated to keep that land open to preserve natural resources.
As you can see, Lucas is facing an uphill battle. Getting the museum built in his wife’s hometown of Chicago might be more difficult than he thought.
