Gold Coast Titans star Greg Bird has sustained a knee injury at his first pre-season training session on Thursday shortly before he was set to face a club disciplinary hearing.
Bird suffered a minor medial strain, however the extent of the injury won’t be known until further scans are completed on Friday.
“Bird did not complete his first session back after injuring his knee in a tackle and medical staff believe he has a minor injury (strain) to his medial ligament,” the club said.
“He will be sent for precautionary scans in the next two days.”
Bird was issued an infringement notice for urinating in public on Sunday night following his wedding last weekend and could be stripped of his co-captaincy role.
“The Gold Coast Titans Disciplinary hearings for Greg Bird and James Roberts concluded a short time ago,” a club statement said.
“The finalisation of the process will occur overnight where the Titans Board members will be contacted to ratify the recommendations of the Disciplinary Committee. The Titans will formally announce the outcome at some stage tomorrow.”
The 30-year-old was fined after being caught urinating on a police car, later admitting at a press conference his actions were “dumb” and “embarrassing”.
“Birdy is one of our leaders, he leads from the front,” teammate Aiden Sezer said at Auckland Nines jersey launch in Sydney.
“The club obviously have their policies and procedures and we can’t do much as players. He wears his heart on his sleeve, he’s our captain and that’s the way it is until now.”
Roberts is also facing a fine after being arrested and charged with being a public nuisance following an October incident in Surfers Paradise. Charges were later dropped.
