Knights vs Warriors

The Newcastle Knights have opened 2015 with a win over the New Zealand Warriors at Hunter Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

In a tense contest that included a variety of errors from both sides, the Knights were able to string together the best offensive game to make the most their time with the ball.

Even possession in the first half kept the match square for most of the first half. Dane Gagai opened the scoring in the 7th minute for the home side, finishing a clinical play in the right corner.

A controversial 8-point try was awarded to Thomas Leuluai in the 27th minute when Tyrone Roberts tried to use his knees to prevent a try close to the line. Roberts was placed on report, while Leuluai had to be taken off to receive treatment.

Ryan Hoffman wrestled his way over the line right on half time to push the Warriors lead out to 8. It was the first game for the forward at his new club and the representative veteran was impressive across the field.

Dane Gagai brought his side back into the match early in the second half with an excellent in and away, leaving his defender clutching at air, to cross again in the right corner.

The Knights had momentum and would not be denied minutes later when Tyler Randell barged over the line off the back of consecutive sets. Newcastle hit the lead at 18-14 with a player off the field.

Sione Mata’utia Was sent from the field for 10 minutes after attempting to slow down play minutes before the try, Newcastle showing good composure to convert the penalty into points.

New Zealand had plenty of opportunity to get back into the match but could not control the ball. Shaun Johnson looked frazzled in attack as the Warriors lacked cohesion.

Newcastle used the buzz created by the home crowd to get over the line again. Robbie Rochow scored in the final minutes to secure a 24-14 win for the home side.
