A new trailer for Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 has been released, and although it features no gameplay footage, it does offer a glimpse into where the game’s story will be taking us. It also features a reference to Edward Snowden, handled with all the subtlety of a sledgehammer to the skull. Ah, Call of Duty – never change.

The teaser trailer charts humanity’s progress from today’s wearables through to the prosthetic limbs and cybernetic implants of the fictional future, showing the public’s growing wariness of the physical and mental “improvements” scientists are making to humans, with Snowden – erm, I mean, “the whistleblower” – coming forward to discuss how the military is using these enhancements in order to turn humans into weapons. “The only questions remains is how far will we allow it go?” Not Snowden says, with the answer presumably being “long enough to fill the 5-hour campaign of at least two Call of Duty games.”
It’s incredibly silly, though it does touch upon the paranoia that many are feeling in the wake of the NSA/WikiLeaks debacle. Considering that Call of Duty was once taunted for having the player kill swarms of nameless foreign enemies, it seems that this time around the game is actively pitting the US government as the enemy, a unique direction for the series if developer Treyarch plans to go down that route. Considering how big the series is, I expect that it featuring an anti-government campaign will cause a lot of controversy, even more than the ‘No Russian’ fiasco.
The reveal of the next game in the hugely popular franchise is scheduled for April 26th, so mark that date down in your diary if you want to see more of Call of Duty going all Deus Ex. Watch the trailer below:
