Sony has announced that it has sold more than 22.3 million PS4 consoles since the platform launched in 2013, a huge number for the company that has been achieved despite it currently lacking an extensive library of software.
The numbers were unveiled by the company in a financial report, which reveals that the company sold 14.8 million PS4s during the 12-month period ending on March 31st, 2015. The company stated that it expected to sell a further 16 million units before the same time next year.
It’s a big number for the company, and if it continues to keep up this traction then it will soon break into the top ten best-selling consoles of all time, with the Super Nintendo being its nearest competitor with 61.91 million consoles sold. All this and the company has yet to release any of its major exclusive titles.

The PS4 has now greatly contributed to Sony’s gaming division, making it the most profitable source of revenue for the company at $11.5 billion. In the report Sony detailed the PS4’s impact upon its earning, writing: “This significant improvement was primarily due to the impact of the above-mentioned increase in (PS4) sales.
“(This was) partially offset by the impact of the decrease in PS3 software sales, the unfavourable impact of the appreciation of the US dollar reflecting the high ratio of US dollar-denominated costs, as well as the recording of an 11.2bn ($93m) write-down of PS Vita and PS TV components in the current fiscal year.”
Unfortunately the PS Vita continues to struggle while the PS4’s profitably increases, with the company’s handheld division falling from 4.1 million units sold to 3.3 million within the same 12-month time period. At this point it seems that hope is lost for the portable console.
With the likes of Uncharted 4 releasing this year the PS4’s stock will only continue to rise, and as the company inevitably line up more triple-A releases over the coming years then we should all expect the PS4 to become one of the biggest successes the gaming industry has seen.
