Chris Pine Lassos The Wonder Woman Movie

The captain of the starship Enterprise may be Wonder Woman’s first love.

Variety is reporting that Chris Pine is in negotiations to join the Wonder Woman movie as Steve Trevor, a U.S. Army Intelligence Officer who is also Wonder Woman’s love interest. Variety notes that Pine won over Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot and production executives in a private meeting, which may lead to his role in the film.

Steve Trevor was one of the earliest supporting characters in Wonder Woman’s adventures, and he played a key role in her origin story. During World War II, Trevor’s plane crashed on Paradise Island (the hidden home of the Amazons), and Princess Diana fell for Steve while nursing him back to health. When Steve left the island, Diana went with him and became the heroine known as Wonder Woman.

There is a chance that the Wonder Woman movie will take place during World War II. Gadot’s Wonder Woman is rumored to be immortal and hundreds of years old by the time that she appears in next year’s Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. On the other hand, Steve Trevor played a supporting role in the Justice League reboot for DC’s New 52. That could mean that Pine would have a role in the Justice League movies as well, if his character is in the present.

Pine is best known for taking over the iconic part of Captain James T. Kirk in the Star Trek films, and his leading roles in This Means War, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, Unstoppable, and Horrible Bosses 2.

Variety also cleared up a rumor about Steve Trevor’s appearance in the Suicide Squad movie. Scott Eastwood was originally thought to be playing Steve Trevor in Suicide Squad, but he will instead be portraying an entirely different character in that movie.

Patty Jenkins will direct the Wonder Woman film, which is currently expected to be released in 2017.
