John Oliver Takes Down FIFA and Sepp Blatter in Rant

Last Week Tonight host John Oliver was one of the first major US television personalities to introduce the States to the underhanded and some might argue downright evil behaviour of FIFA. Now Oliver is back with a “victory rant” of sorts, following the multiple arrests made of various high-profile FIFA officials.

During the segment, Oliver notes how astonishing it is that the US were behind the arrests, noting that the country “which cares the least about football” were the ones to topple the governing body and finally expose its corruption. Oliver then proceeds to highlight the profile of the FBI’s alleged informant Chuck Blazer, a FIFA employee himself who, among other things, has previously failed to file his tax returns and owns an apartment in Trump Tower that is occupied solely by his cat.

Of course, not all of Oliver’s dreams are coming true when it comes to the FIFA corruption arrests. The governing body’s president Sepp Blatter still remains in charge, though following last week’s revelations he is certainly on shaky ground. Therefore Oliver has made a plea with the only people who can convince FIFA’s heads to forcibly oust Blatter from his position – the organisation’s sponsors such as Coca Cola, Budweiser and McDonald’s – to withdraw their sponsorship. Hopefully Oliver’s call to arms will inspire a wider plea for the companies to do just that.
