In 1996, director Wes Craven and screenwriter Kevin Williamson rewrote the rules for horror movies in Scream. The first film in the Scream franchise memorably began with Drew Barrymore’s Casey meeting a grim demise.
The new Scream TV series goes for a similar situation in its opening minutes. MTV has released the first eight minutes of the Scream pilot, which finds actress Bella Thorne (The DUFF) doing the Barrymore by appearing as mean girl, Nina Patterson.
Back in 1996, the world was a very different place. Now, technology can be weapon, and it can destroy a life with just a few clicks. In this teaser, Bex Taylor-Klaus’ Audrey is outed as a Lesbian against her will by Nina. But the calculated assault on Nina suggests that the killer had targeted her before this happened.
Thanks to cell phones, the new Scream killer doesn’t even have to call his or her victims. A text message can carry the threat and mask the killer’s identity until it’s too late.
Scream the TV Series also stars Willa Fitzgerald, John Karna, Connor Weil and Amadeus Serafini. The first episode will premiere on MTV on Tuesday, June 30.
