Stephen Colbert has hosted Gwen Stefani on the Late Show, but the pre-show hit a snag before Stefani even went on stage.
Colbert interupted Stefani while she was getting ready backstage, to ask her what song she’d be singing on the show that night. When he told her he was just making sure she wasn’t going to sing Hollaback Girl, Stefani arked up – asking the talkshow host why he had an objection to the song.
“I’m just kind of a stickler when it comes to spelling, and I don’t know if you know it, but in the song, you spell ‘bananas’ wrong,” Colbert says. Stefani then sings the song lyric (minus swearing), “the stuff is bananas, b-a-n-a-n-a-s”.
“The correct spelling of bananas is actually b-a-n-n-a-n-a-s” contests Colbert, “but there’s no way you could have known that.” Stefani wasn’t having any of it though, countering with “I think I know a little more about bananas than you do.”
“Gwen, with all due respect, just because you wrote a song about bananas doesn’t mean you’re an expert,” says Colbert – getting in the last word on the subject.
Unfortunately, the argument ended there, and Stefani eventually went on to sing her new single, Make Me Like You on the show live.
