Detox Mondays | It’s the Fourth of July, Eat This Detoxifying Breakfast Salad!

When the Fourth of July falls on a Monday, you know the weekend’s going to be epic. Bet you didn’t prepare for the massive hangover you have now, though. If you partied the way we did, there’s a big chance your body is majorly dehydrated, weak and working in overdrive trying to get rid of all the toxins you threw into it over the last 3 days. Rather than heading to the nearest In N Out, make this fresh, detoxifying breakfast salad to ease your stomach and hydrate your body.

The Ingredients

  • 2 cups watermelon, cubed
  • 1 cup jicama, peeled and cubed
  • 1 cup blueberries
  • 1 cup strawberries
  • 2 tablespoons lime juice
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ¼ cup fresh mint, chopped
  • ¼ cup chopped coconut
  • 1/2 cup greek yogurt, vanilla (optional)

The Process

Mix watermelon, jicama, blueberries and strawberries in a chilled metal bowl. The cold metal bowl with keep the fruit fresh and crisp. In a smaller bowl, mix the lime juice, lemon juice, honey, cayenne and salt and pour over the fruit mixture. Chop up the mint, almonds and coconut and sprinkle it on top. Chill for an hour before serving. Top with a dollop of vanilla greek yogurt to add protein when ready to serve.

When you’re feeling queasy, there’s no food than mint. Eating mint leaves soothes upset stomachs, relieves indigestion and inflammation and even helps alleviate headaches. It does this by activating the salivary glands in the mouth, which then secrete digestive enzymes and helps break down anything in your stomach. The lemon, honey, and cayenne combo is a powerful detoxifier. Meaning it’ll help you get rid of anything in your body from the weekend that you really don’t want anymore.

The Logic

Juice is great, but the morning after a big weekend is going to require something more solid to get you back on your feet. This detoxifying fruit salad has all of the ingredients to get you hydrated and detoxed while still easing any upset stomach or headaches that are left over. Plus, it’s red, white and blue, so you can celebrate 4th of July with a treat that’s both festive and healthier than those layered jello shots you consumed over the weekend.
