Watch Of The Week | Piaget Polo S

Swiss timepiece maker Piaget has reinvented the wheel. Sure they’ve been on our radar for their incarnations of ultra slim chronographs and timepieces, luxury watches and all things under the sun that start and end with chic. But now they’ve turned the page to go back to their roots.

Sit down, children, Grandpa has a story to tell you. In the 70s Piaget first introduced the gold standard of timepieces called the Polo. It was for all purposes the sports watch to have, ultimately blinged out in solid gold. Then the 80s came and the very same timepiece was responsible for one third of all of Piaget’s sales. Talk about revolutionizing the culture of menswear and accessories with one watch. The Polo essentially did that.

Fast forward to the present times and Piaget has endeavored to recreate some of that magic with a new version of the Polo. The Polo S to be exact. What has changed and what remains the same? Simplicity is the key ingredient powering this solid steel version of the Polo. In fact there aren’t many bells and whistles on display here to show off. It is a stripped down time only version doing just what the description sound like: tells time.

The S in Polo S marks the fact that it is a steel watch and not the classic gold version. But the S could also bear witness to just how simply elegant and pristine this watch is. It uses an automatic caliber 1110P movement. And all that meticulous timekeeping comes coupled with a very simple date at the 6 o’clock position. As for size it clocks in at 9.4mm thick but can be upgraded to 11.2.

It also features superluminova markers for all those wanting to read the time in the dark. And it has up to 100m water resistance. The Polo S Automatic comes in blue, grey or silver dial. It and its more upmarket relative the Polo S Chronograph come in stainless steel cases. What’s more? It’s the official watch worn on the wrist of all around cool guy Ryan Reynolds as a part of his duties as Piaget brand ambassador.

The Polo S Automatic retails for $9,350 and the Chronograph for $12,400.
