Late singer-songwriter George Michael has been immortalised in a new mural painted by ‘Kissing Kanye’ artist Scott Marsh in Sydney.
The mural, which is titled ‘St. George’, portrays Michael as a saint, complete with a halo, robe and rainbow-coloured scarf. The mural is located on the corner of Bray Street and Flora Street in the suburb of St Peters.
Speaking with The Music, Marsh says the mural holds a special significance for the residents of the building it’s painted on.
“The guys who live in that building, they were both friends with George Michael and I had already been speaking with them about painting their wall,” Marsh says.
“They were telling me stories about him and their times with him in Sydney and he sounded like a pretty incredible person, so I just sat down with them and threw some ideas around. The idea we stuck with was him as the patron saint of the gays… They love it.”
Because patron saints are usually portrayed holding things in their hands, Marsh gave Michael a joint and some amyl in his new mural. “[His friends] were like, ‘I don’t think we ever saw him without a joint in his hand, and put amyl in his other hand,’ and I just thought, that’s too funny,” he says.
Marsh’s George Michael mural comes after controversial street artist Lushsux unveiled his own George Michael mural earlier this month, complete with references to a bunch of other dead celebrities.
