Friday, June 2 is National Doughnut Day. No matter where you are, you’re not far from a doughnut. Some are admittedly better than others. It seems that the more metropolitan the location, the larger the variety of flavors, glazes, and toppings. New York and California are predictably the most innovative when it comes to making doughnuts a spectacle, though pockets of Texas, Oregon, and even Minnesota have notoriously delicious doughnut scenes.
Doughnuts haven’t evolved much in The Bible Belt. In those regions, you’ll have to settle for traditional glazed, sprinkled, and old-fashioned style pastries. You might happen upon a long john or a fritter if you’re lucky. Still, even in ho-hum parts of doughnut country, there are some surprises, like Polar Bakery in Oklahoma City; it sells “pimp hand” doughnuts instead of bear claws. And many of the doughnut shops operating are independent, artisanal, or smaller chains, so uniqueness abounds.
The good news is there’s at least one mouthwatering doughnut shop in every state in the U.S. so there’s simply no excuse for skipping one of the tastiest food holidays of the year. And now, without further ado, your doughnut porn:
