If you pay any attention to the Scotch whisky world, you’ve seen countless news stories about historic bottles of whisky being sold for millions of dollars. It’s gotten to the point that when we see a bottle of 40-year-old single malt whisky from some popular brand being sold for $3 million at auction we don’t even click on the story anymore. Who really cares? We aren’t going to be drinking it. If it happens enough, it’s barely news anymore. But, while we don’t care about dusty, old 750-milliliter bottles being sold for outlandish sums, we are interested to hear how much the world’s largest bottle of whisky will fetch.
Last fall, investment firm Fah Mai Holdings Group, alternative assets firm Rosewin Holdings, and independent bottler Duncan Taylor Scotch Whisky collaborated to create the world’s largest bottle of whisky. The 5-foot, 11-inch, 311-liter bottle isn’t filled with bottom-shelf swill, though. It’s filled with a 32-year-old single malt Scotch from renowned distiller The Macallan.

With such an old whisky inside and so much of it, we’d be extremely surprised if this giant bottle doesn’t become the most expensive bottle in the world very soon. Currently, the most valuable bottle is $1,825,000. Since a 30-year-old bottle of The Macallan sells for around $3.000 for a regular, 750-milliliter bottle, it’s likely that when it goes to auction, this will not only be the largest bottle in the world but also the most expensive.
We’ll have to wait until May 25 to find out. This is when the bottle, referred to as ‘The Intrepid,” will go up for auction at Lyon & Turnbull. So, if you have some extra cash lying around and you want to add this bottle to your collection, get your checkbook ready. Or, be like us, and enjoy a nice bottle of 10-12-year old single malt for around $70 bucks instead.
