The Prostate Cancer Foundation has returned thousands of dollars in donations from Reddit users, who were raising money “in honor” of the leaked nude photos of Jennifer Lawrence.

The “campaign” was started by subscribers of a subreddit dedicated to the sharing of the leaked photos, starting as an in-joke in reference to the theory that masturbation can help prevent prostate cancer. After the Reddit users raised over $6,000 for the charity, the Prostate Cancer Foundation released a statement, saying:
“A post appeared on Reddit late Monday afternoon, September 1, 2014. A Reddit user directed other Reddit users to make a donation to the Prostate Cancer Foundation without the Foundation’s knowledge. We would never condone raising funds for cancer research in this manner. Out of respect for everyone involved and in keeping with our own standards, we are returning all donations that resulted from this post.”
The Reddit users who had donated promptly began emailing the PCF in protest, with one such complaint reading: “So you would rather watch people with cancer die than to take reddit money? You are literally saying that Jennifer Lawrence is more important than the cure for prostate cancer. Disgusting.”

Following the news that their donations would be returned, the Reddit users set up another charity campaign, this time for Water.org. The title of the post spearheading the campaign reads: “Since the PCF has returned donations I say we instead donate to water.org. Water is a fundamental human need and right and, since we all seem to be thirsty motherfuckers, it seems like the place to go.”
Since an anonymous 4chan user posted the leaked photos they have been widely distributed across the Internet, which has led to an investigation from the FBI. Back in 2010 when naked photos of Scarlett Johansson were leaked, the hacker was eventually found 11 months later and prosecuted. The hacker involved in this latest scandal has not yet been caught, though has made several posts claiming that he/she is currently in hiding.
